Shahada

Your journey to Islam begins with a single declaration of faith

What is the Shahada?

The Shahada is the Islamic declaration of faith and the first of the five pillars of Islam. It is a simple yet profound statement that marks the beginning of one's journey as a Muslim.

أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمداً رسول الله

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah

"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

By declaring the shahada with sincerity and conviction, you affirm the oneness of God (Allah) and accept Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as His final messenger. This declaration is all that is needed to become a Muslim. There are no complicated rituals or lengthy processes — just a sincere heart and a willingness to submit to the Creator.

Common Questions About Shahada

No, you do not need to be fluent in Arabic. The Imam will help you pronounce the shahada in Arabic and you will also say it in English so you fully understand what you are declaring. What matters most is the sincerity in your heart.
No, changing your name is not required in Islam. Many new Muslims choose to keep their birth name. However, if your name has a meaning that contradicts Islamic beliefs, the Imam may suggest an alternative. Some new Muslims choose to adopt an additional Islamic name, but this is entirely optional.
That is perfectly fine! There is no rush or pressure at all. You are welcome to visit the masjid, attend open events, sit in on classes, and meet with the Imam as many times as you need. Take all the time you need to learn and ask questions. We are here for you whenever you are ready.
While the shahada is valid between you and Allah at any time, we encourage taking it at the masjid with witnesses. This allows the community to welcome you, provides you with an official shahada certificate, and connects you immediately with support and mentorship.
Yes, after taking your shahada at ICOSF, you will receive an official shahada certificate signed by the Imam and witnesses. This certificate can be useful for various purposes, including Hajj (pilgrimage) applications and legal documentation.
This is a common concern, and you are not alone. Islam teaches maintaining respect and kindness toward parents and family regardless of their faith. Our Imam and mentors can provide guidance on navigating family dynamics. Many new Muslims find that patience, good character, and open communication help over time.
